For some factories it was too complicated, but not Cookson & Clegg. Founded in Blackburn, a town in the north of England, in 1860, the firm began life as a leather currier and manufacturer of boot uppers. By the 1930s they were producing jerkins, flying helmets and other leather products for the British Army and soon started making military outerwear and legwear. Their cut and construction are based on a pair that belonged to a soldier posted to West Africa in the 1950s. He wore them to play polo. Years later they were worn by his daughter on the beach. Over half a century on, that same pair are worn by her son just because. He founded Auld Friend in 2018. And so the journey to creating our jodhpurs began. A tailor in London traced over the original pair to create a pattern which evolved as we refined the shape and sampled different materials and fabrics, all found in the UK. The final step was to find a factory to make them. And so we did – in the north of England. We’re an online only business, so you’ll only find our jodhpurs here. In fact, these kinds of classic jodhpurs aren’t easy to find anywhere else. Our name is inspired by that original pair – and all those things, pieces of clothing or otherwise, that somehow become alive. Because they hold the memory of moments. The construction of our jodhpurs is based on a pair that have endured over 60 years – and are still going strong. Manufactured in one of the most reputable factories in England from high-quality materials all found in the UK, they are far from fast fashion. As for Auld Friend itself, we’re focused on only producing one garment in small production runs so there’s as little waste as possible. We’re doing the best we can but know we’re not perfect yet. One of them, Sir Pratap Singh ­– the Regent of Jodhpur – brought his polo team with him. They caused quite a stir. It wasn’t just that they won most of their matches. It was that when they won, they won in style. Flared at the hip and tight round the calve, the unique cut of their riding trousers had never been seen before. Soon, cavalry regiments, then Hollywood stars and the fashion world co-opted the ‘jodhpur’, with Coco Chanel arguably their most influential admirer. For perhaps the first time, sportswear became streetwear… and so it was until the 1950s. But then the introduction of synthetic, stretchable fabrics changed jodhpurs forever – and fashion moved on. Before long, that uniquely elegant shape would be forgotten.
